Last Blog Post
April 10, 2009 by deanidaWell I have learned a lot in this class. Again, my favourite was the whole micro blogging site of Twitter. I learned about wikis and how they are being used by businesses to gain insight …I honestly didn’t know what wikis are and I always refer to Wikipedia. I never used social bookmarking before, so I learned how to use them and how useful they can be to refer to and organize information. I also became a little more concerned about what information is being shared about me online. This course wasa great because there were a lot of items presented to me that I never knew before I also like how this class was made to allow students to complete assignments more freely unlike other classes taht pile on assignments all due at the same time. I also like that I am free to discuss what I feel in class without having to bureaucratically raise my hand.
I feel that information society is necessary and is essential for us to expand our minds and gain more insight and knowledege about the world and others. I love how the information society is able to ultimately connect people on a global scale where geographic boundaries no longer exist.
Maintaining Privacy Online
April 10, 2009 by deanidaThe measures I take to try to maintain my privacy are by using fake names, dates and locations. I do this just because you never know who is out to get you…well I dont really do it for that reason I just do it without really thinking.. I like being somewhat private, so maybe thats why. I don’t feel I am a target for anyone…but I do fear that photographs of me having fun will wppear with out my knowledge and this really does not help me in taking privacy measures. I honestly don’t think there is information that I want tht i dont have access to…stuff like medical records I don’t have but I am sure my family doctor would be willing to share it with me if asked:)
Privacy Issues
April 10, 2009 by deanidaThe privacy issues that concern me are ones that can be harmful towards me or any of my contacts. I think I worry most aboutr my banking information as I once had my bankcard frauded for 1200 dollars…it was so awful. I think I would also worry about information about me if I had a stalker but so far good no stalkers at the present…knock on wood..relief. On facebook I share a fake age, my name, my friends and my fake location….so my information is not very accurate for anyone that wishes to know any details about me. However I do share pictures of myslef that are deemed appropriat and I would not worry if an employer seeked them out…the only thing on facebook that I don’t have instant control over is what people publish on my wall which has gotten me in trouble along with being tagged in photographs. My friend A asked me to go to this family party with her, I really did not want to go …so I made up a big I am sick stories. That night I decided to go out with my other girlfriend to a local concert…and 5 days later, my friend A was calling me a liar because she saw pictures of me at the concert dated to the day of the family party…whoops. This story shows that privacy does not really exist online as others have pwer to publish stories and photos of you that could get you into trouble.
Browser History Reveals
April 10, 2009 by deanidaSince I share my computer my younger brother it is a combination of stuff…..some keywords I can share that aren’t to personal have to do with music downloading, lots of online travel agancies, dresses for bridesmaid, wedding, electronics and online gaming. These keywords can be valued by third parties who want to market any of the following products to me and my brother, bridesmaid dresses, games, music, airline tickets, and electronics. An outsider perspective would assume that this person travels a lot, love music and games and is going to be a part of a wedding some time soon.
The keyword I picked to search on google, yahoo and live was “travel.” Yahoo provided me with an abdundance of travel websites and packages area specifis to Canada. Google provided the same information as well. Live same sort of results with the addition of definitions. The reason ofr this is probably because travel is such a broad topic and these websites produce the most popular sites that relate to travel hence their similarities in search results. I got a lot of travel sites, I did not can area specific besides Canada or any travel advice….but I don’t need travel advice as I consider myself a professional travel and baggage packer haha
Three things that I have learned so Far
April 10, 2009 by deanidaWell to be completely honest I have learned more than three things in this course about information that is created and shared online. My favourite has to be about the website twitter it is tototally the “cocktail party” of the web. Before this course never heard of it and now its everywhere and I honestly feel that this website is genius. I always hear about it on television as stories that feature politician and celebrity blogs. I have very few friendson it but in fact all of my friends accept one are from the class and the people I follow provide me with comic relief with their brief updates and I also love venting on it as I tend not to complain much out in the open. I also learned about social bookmarking which I have never done before this course, it seems very useful but I think it will take some time for me to get use to it. Finally, the whole LinkedIn thing amazed me…createing resumes online to be viewed…wow.
My Linked In Link
April 10, 2009 by deanidaHere is the link…http://www.linkedin.com/myprofile?trk=hb_side_pro
I never really new about a site like this even existing but for some reason it does not surprise me. While producing my online resume I found myslef witholding a lot of information about myself maybe this is because I am not use to such a device or maybe its because I am in disbelief that employers would actually look over my resume. I did not make much about myself public because maybe I believe yto much in them old fashion way of face to face communication…and finding a job that way and through having ‘connections.’ As I think about all of my good jobs were through coneection and maybe this site would be useful to me if I felt that I was receiving some sort of accessibilty and connection with employers.
